Keep Away From "Menu Traps" To Comply With Your Diet Plan

By Gina Larsson

In a world of fastfoods and global cuisines, eating out is such a delectable delight that almost everyone enjoys. Many a great moments have been had over a table of food and conversation. A gastronomic experience can be very fulfilling to the tummy and to the soul, except for one minor detail: it can be agonizing when a person needs to constantly watch out for his or her diet.

Do not be swayed by menu pictures. Photographs tickle our appetite, especially when professional photographers are specifically hired to showcase the restaurant's products. Stick to food items listed and internally analyzed their nature.

Do not be fooled by the name of a menu item as well.

For instance, New York's Best Pizza and Pepperoni Pizza sound totally different, but they may just be the same thing.

Another trick that menus often have is to place unhealthy dishes beside healthy ones to mask the former's true nature. When paralleled this way, diners often resort to ordering the unhealthy dish as this has been a psychological trait common to most people. Beware, therefore, of this human inclination.

Fourth, vegetable sidings or green side-orders are good for you. However, many of these are cooked in high-fat butter, fried, covered in gravy or are high in carbohydrates. Be wary of the belief that since you are already eating your greens, your main dish is excused from scrutiny. You may be eating your peas and carrots, but the steak that comes with it is very high in fat and cholesterol.

Unless eaten steamed or sauteed, vegetables therefore, may not completely be healthy.

Finally, sampling food from platter orders are a no-no. Although servings like chicken buffalo wings or mozzarella sticks are generally small on these platters, sampling at a few items can lead to more calorie and fat intake than any other kind of meal eating. One is far better off ordering a plate of salad and a main dish than devouring a food platter.

When eating out, these five simple tips must not be forgotten in order to maintain healthy diets.
